Carter Dome
#9About Carter Dome
Carter Dome stands at 4,832 feet as the highest peak in the Carter-Moriah Range. The mountain's distinctive dome shape gives it its name. While the summit itself is wooded, nearby viewpoints offer excellent vistas of the Presidential Range and Wild River Valley. Carter Notch Hut, located below the mountain, is one of the AMC's most scenic backcountry facilities.
History
Named after Dr. Ezra Carter, an early land surveyor in the area, the mountain has been part of hiking routes since the 1880s. Carter Notch Hut, established in 1914, was one of the earliest AMC huts and provides access to Carter Dome and the surrounding peaks. The mountain is a key part of the Carter-Moriah Range traverse, a popular multi-day hiking route.
